Spanish airline Air Europa has started direct flights between Madrid and Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport. This event was highlighted by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA). The carrier will operate this service using its Boeing 787 Dreamliner widebody airliners. This is the airline’s first regular service to anywhere in sub-Saharan Africa. “The launch of Air Europa’s direct service between Madrid and Johannesburg reflects confidence in South Africa as a destination for business, tourism and investment,” highlighted ACSA Cluster 1 regional GM Jabulane Khambule. “Every new international route strengthens our country’s connectivity, stimulates economic activity and supports the continued growth of tourism and trade. We are proud to welcome Air Europa to OR Tambo International Airport and look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

The global representative body for the airline industry, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), has highlighted the delays in deliveries of new airliners. These delays are having real cost consequences for airlines, the association pointed out at its recent AGM. “The aircraft order backlog is over 18 000. And the average fleet age has reached a record 15.2 years,” highlighted IATA director-general Willie Walsh, in his 'Report on the Air Transport Industry'. “Moreover, being short over 5 000 more fuel-efficient replacement aircraft that airlines had counted on means missed efficiency gains, not to mention higher lease rates and increased maintenance costs. In total, supply chain failures cost airlines at least $11-billion in 2025. Today’s higher fuel prices will only make that worse.”

The Cape Town-Zanzibar route will be operated by the airline’s new flagship airliner, the Embraer E195-E2. “The introduction of our new flagship aircraft, the E195-E2, with its innovative business class and comfortable economy seats, enables Airlink to bring destinations such as Zanzibar within convenient non-stop reach of Cape Town, which is an important source market for travel to the island,” highlighted Airlink CEO de Villiers Engelbrecht. “Cape Town is also our second hub and a popular connecting point for long-haul, regional and local customers travelling with Airlink or any of our partner airlines from around the world.”

KSIA is KwaZulu-Natal province’s main international passenger gateway and a major benefit for the provincial economy. “[KSIA] is a critical asset of the regional economic activity in the province, supporting not only tourism growth and global connectivity but strengthening trade flows,” highlighted KSIA Regional GM Nkosinathi Myataza. “Its evolution over the past 16 years is a testament to sustained investment and to the conviction that an airport’s measure is not only the number of passengers it handles but the breadth of opportunity it creates for the communities it serves.”

Global air cargo markets decelerated in March, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported. (IATA was the global representative body for the airline industry.) “Air cargo demand fell 4.8% in March compared to the previous year. This was mostly due to severe disruptions at major Gulf hubs due to war in the Middle East. The timing of the usual post–Lunar New Year slowdown also added to the decline,” explained IATA director-general Willie Walsh. “The underlying demand trends, at this point, appear strong and the recent World Trade Organization and International Monetary Fund revisions to trade and GDP projections continue to see growth in 2026. Importantly, air cargo networks are providing the flexibility needed to support global supply chains as they adjust to geopolitical, tariff, and operational strains. All eyes are on fuel supply and price, which are expected to test the industry’s resilience in the coming months.”
