(Virtual Showroom) Celebrated annually on 23 June, International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) shines a spotlight on the achievements of women engineers around the world while encouraging greater diversity and inclusion within the profession. For Dr. Adwoa Boaduo, Group Head of Safety at Rosond, the day is also an opportunity to challenge outdated perceptions about women in mining and engineering. Dr. Boaduo’s journey into mining engineering was shaped by personal experiences growing up in Virginia in the Free State, where she witnessed both the opportunities and hardships associated with mining communities.

For many operations across mining, quarrying, bulk materials handling and processing industries, conveyor problems have become an accepted part of daily operations. Misalignment, carryback, spillage, belt damage, idler wear and unplanned stoppages are often treated as isolated maintenance issues, addressed through reactive component replacement before operations move on to the next failure. According to conveyor specialist Tru-Trac Rollers (Pty) Ltd, this approach is one of the primary reasons why conveyor failures continue to repeat across the industry.

Breaking into the aggregates and sand market has never been easy for small operators. High upfront capital costs, long equipment lead times and the technical risk of stitching together multiple plant components have historically placed modern sand production out of reach for many start-up quarries. In response to this challenge, Pilot Crushtec has fundamentally rethought how smaller producers can access proven sand-making technology - without taking on disproportionate financial or operational risk. Rather than forcing new entrants to choose between unreliable second-hand machinery or costly bespoke plant builds, Pilot Crushtec’s Pilot Modular Sand Making Plants are designed to remove friction at every stage of the start-up journey. From engineering and manufacturing through to installation, commissioning and aftersales support, the modular range is purpose-built to shorten timelines, control costs and give emerging quarries a reliable platform from day one.

It might sound like a broken record, but across South Africa, building owners continue to grapple with fragmented infrastructure which offer very little if any insight into how systems are performing. Today, a typical building will feature HVAC systems operating independently from lighting controls, while security, access control and energy monitoring are managed through completely different interfaces. The result: inefficient energy use, limited operational visibility and a poor occupant experience.

South African diversified and acquisitive group Origin Enterprises, which is led by CEO Gary Shayne, has been assembling a portfolio of companies that supply the essentials the country's industrial economy runs on. The mines, construction sites, packhouses, sugar mills, forestry operations and industrial plants that anchor the country's real-economy output rely on a continuous flow of technical and specialist product to keep operating safely, legally and at scale. “Protective clothing for the workforce is critical to keeping these industries operating safely and efficiently. Specialist applications in the construction industry prolong the life of infrastructure in the built environment. These categories sit alongside operations rather than within them, but the operations cannot run without them,” says Shayne.

Mining and mineral processing operations rely on the uninterrupted operation of samplers and centrifuges to maintain product quality and process efficiency. Samplers collect representative samples that are accurate and reproducible, while centrifuges enable effective solid-liquid separation, dewatering, and classification within a process plant. Despite their importance within the mineral processing value chain, maintenance of these electromechanical systems is often carried out reactively rather than proactive manner. This can lead to inaccurate sampling, unexpected failures, and costly operational downtime. To better manage this, Multotec’s proactive maintenance approach helps customers extend the lifespan of their equipment, monitor wear rates and supports overall plant performance with the aim of achieving the best possible life cycle cost from the installed equipment.

Recent public statements by Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe have reignited debate around accountability, with the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) maintaining that its mandate extends only to legal mining activities and not to illegal mining operations. At the same time, law enforcement agencies continue to make arrests linked to illegal mining, highlighting the growing scale and sophistication of criminal networks operating within the sector.

An integral part of sustainable mining is the provision of services that extend beyond the physical mining right area and the life of mine. Human resources (HR), payroll, employee benefits and occupational health practitioners are often confronted with legacy challenges that existing service models are not equipped to resolve. While it is essential to address immediate issues, it is equally important to adopt strategic interventions that help future-proof mining operations and improve long-term outcomes for workers, employers and communities. From bespoke mining HR solutions provider TEBA’s perspective, several critical interventions are essential to strengthen sustainable mining across the sector.

As environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations become increasingly embedded in business strategy, companies are facing growing pressure to demonstrate how sustainability commitments translate into operational reality. While many organisations have made public ESG pledges, stakeholders are now looking beyond policies and reporting frameworks to assess how these commitments are being integrated throughout value chains. This includes everything from procurement practices and supplier engagement to production processes, logistics and operational decision-making.

For more than 120 years, human resources solutions provider TEBA has supported the mining industry through collaboration on employment-related processes, policies and systems. Long before collaboration became an industry catchphrase, mining companies recognised that shared challenges required shared solutions. Organised recruitment, followed by coordinated transport, payments, accommodation and immigration management, laid the foundation for a safer and more efficient industry. A defining milestone came in the early 1980s with the introduction of industry numbers linked to a centralised record of service (ROS) for each employee. This innovation did more than improve administration; it fundamentally reshaped how the industry manages workforce mobility, screening, accountability, risk management, compensation, benefit distributions and occupational health. That its relevance has only grown over the past 40 years is a testament to the foresight behind its creation.

As global scrutiny intensifies, mining companies are faced with a seemingly insurmountable task; ensuring their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) pledges translate into measurable and sustainable impact. The above is also echoed by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) which emphasises, “ESG is not only a responsible approach to business but a strategic imperative for long-term success”.

In African mining, where high costs, harsh environments and tight margins are prevalent, maintenance can make or break profitability. SEW‑EURODRIVE’s DriveRadar® is at the heart of a shift from reactive repairs to intelligent predictive maintenance. As the sector continues to embrace artificial intelligence (AI), Jonathan McKey, Sales and Marketing Manager at SEW-EURODRIVE South Africa, explains that DriveRadar® already incorporates elements of AI to help mines make better decisions faster. SEW‑EURODRIVE began its digital journey with relatively basic condition monitoring tools but has steadily expanded both the scope and intelligence of its systems. “We started introducing various forms of instrumentation and condition monitoring systems in South Africa in 2008. Since then, we have evolved our technology to encompass more drive information in a singular diagnostic system. This has resulted in the introduction of DriveRadar®.,” he explains.

In bulk materials handling operations, conveyor belt misalignment remains one of the most persistent causes of unplanned downtime, excessive maintenance and premature equipment wear. According to Weba Chute Systems, correctly engineered chute systems are playing an increasingly important role in addressing this challenge at source. Poor belt tracking is seldom only a conveyor issue. In many cases, the root cause lies upstream at the transfer point where inconsistent material flow, uneven loading and uncontrolled discharge place unnecessary stress on the belt system.
