            <description><![CDATA[The South African National Space Agency (Sansa) has launched a competition for the country’s high school learners, for the design of an official mascot for the national space programme. Up to now, there has never been an official symbol or mascot to represent South Africa’s space activities. “A mascot gives people something to hold on to,” highlighted Sansa CEO Humbulani Mudau. “At home, it puts a face to our space programme and helps ordinary South Africans, especially young people, connect with an industry that can feel distant and highly technical. Abroad, it becomes a symbol that our country can rally behind – helping position us as a serious, creative and capable player in international space affairs. We want a mascot that says both.”]]></description>

            <description><![CDATA[With both elements of the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) under construction, the organisation responsible for creating and operating it, the SKA Observatory (SKAO), has released a book, “Advancing Astrophysics II’, that highlights the huge range of research that the SKA will allow. (A previous book had been published by the SKAO’s predecessor, the SKA Organisation, in 2015.) South Africa is hosting the SKA-Mid instrument, which will eventually have 197 dishes, incorporating the country’s own, existing, MeerKAT array, while Australia is hosting the SKA-Low instrument, which will eventually comprise 131 072 antennas. The SKA-Low released its first test image, captured using 1 024 antennas, in March last year. The SKA-Mid is expected to do the same later this year, using four dishes. The SKAO head office is hosted by the UK.]]></description>

            <description><![CDATA[The Karoo-based Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) has played a significant role in an urgent international collaboration to monitor a rarely observed phenomenon: the actual start and development of a supernova explosion. It started in March, when the Chinese-European Einstein Probe X-ray space telescope detected a brief flash of soft (lower energy) X-rays, from a galaxy some 500-million light-years distant (this flash was designated EP260321a). A global monitoring campaign was immediately implemented – ground-based telescopes started their observations of EP260321a within an hour of its discovery. These established that the phenomenon was a supernova, subsequently designated SN 2026gzf, that was brightening rapidly.    ]]></description>

            <description><![CDATA[The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) has confirmed that construction of its new Deep Space Ground Station, at Matjiesfontein in the Karoo region of the Western Cape province, is on schedule and should be completed within the next 18 to 24 months. A project such as this requires the highest construction, engineering and quality standards and these are being met. Matjiesfontein is SANSA’s second ground station, the first being the long-established complex at Hartebeesthoek, west of Pretoria, in Gauteng province. The Matjiesfontein ground station is fully funded by government, through the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation. Once completed, it will strengthen the country’s position in the global space sector and reinforce its participation in international space science programmes.]]></description>

            <description><![CDATA[In an initiative developed by the South African Rooibos Council (SARC), which is the representative and promotion body for rooibos processors, packers and brand owners, seeds from the rooibos plant will be sent into space, to the International Space Station (ISS), in October. The seeds will be housed in a “nanolab” during the mission, which will last several weeks, before they return to Earth. The initiative has been dubbed Rooibos in Space. The intent is to stimulate science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education in the Cederberg region – the rooibos heartland – of the Western Cape province. The South African-led Africa2Moon is the first all-African space exploration mission, and was selected by the Chinese National Space Administration (CNSA) as one of the 11 international payloads to be carried by Chang’e-8, which will land in the lunar South Polar region and deploy a rover and a robot. Lead institution for Africa2Moon is the Foundation for Space Development in Africa, in a collaboration with the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), the South African National Space Agency, SU, Rhodes University, the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South African companies active in the space sector, and other organisations and institutions. The aim is to deploy a radio telescope technology demonstrator on the far side of the Moon.   ]]></description>

The IDIA was created to meet the problem of processing, analysing, interpreting and visualising the huge amounts of data that would be produced by the next generation of radio telescope arrays. South Africa’s own world-leading MeerKAT, which became fully operational in 2018, is the most notable of these. The target publication date for public comment is January 2027, according to Jeanette Morwane, the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies acting deputy director-general.
