The Bargaining Council for the Civil Engineering Industry (BCCEI) continues to play an important role in supporting stability, compliance and fair labour practices across South Africa’s civil engineering sector. One area where this role is increasingly valuable is in raising awareness and understanding of the industry’s collective agreements among contractors and subcontractors operating on construction projects. The civil engineering sector relies heavily on collaboration between principal contractors and a wide network of subcontractors. These subcontractors often provide specialised skills and services that are critical to the successful delivery of infrastructure projects. However, many smaller or emerging subcontractors may not always be fully familiar with the requirements and obligations contained in the industry’s collective agreements.

The human capacity gap in Africa’s energy transition

For much of the last decade, the success of Africa’s energy transition has been measured in megawatts. We celebrate the commissioning of solar plants, wind farms, and battery projects. We track investment commitments, transmission infrastructure and carbon reductions. These are important indicators of progress, but they tell only half the story. The real question is no longer whether Africa can build renewable energy. It is whether Africa can develop the people who will sustain it. South Africa’s Just Energy Transition has always been about more than replacing one source of electricity with another. It is about creating an economy that is cleaner, more resilient and, importantly, more inclusive. That means recognising that human capacity – our technicians, artisans, operators, engineers and community leaders – is every bit as critical as physical infrastructure.

Encouragingly, collaboration between public and private sector stakeholders in South Africa’s civil engineering industry is strengthening - underpinned by a firmer stance on accountability across the construction value chain. According to Lindie Fourie, Operations Manager at the Bargaining Council for the Civil Engineering Industry (BCCEI), recent remarks by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure that a number of contractors have already been blacklisted in 2026 for non-compliance and unethical practices send a clear signal that enforcement is gaining traction. “The increased visibility of enforcement actions is an important step in restoring confidence in the sector,” Fourie says. “It demonstrates a commitment to accountability and helps to protect those contractors who are operating responsibly and within the framework of the law.”

In food manufacturing, expiry date and shelf life management are not optional. They are a regulatory requirement that directly impacts consumer safety and brand reputation. Compliance frameworks such as Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), ISO 22000 and regional food safety laws demand precise control over shelf life, batch tracking and traceability. A single lapse can trigger hefty fines and long-term damage to customer trust. For operations leaders, this means shelf life management ...

In modern manufacturing, operational downtime, component degradation and structural failure can have significant financial consequences. Across industries such as heavy tooling, automotive, aerospace and food processing, engineers must contend with friction, thermal stress, mechanical fatigue and stringent regulatory requirements. When critical injection moulds crack, aerospace components fail inspection or food-grade stainless steel develops surface imperfections that encourage bacterial growth, conventional repair methods are often inadequate. Precision tools and equipment supplier Cape Tools provides specialised engineering solutions that combine traditional metalworking expertise with advanced automated technologies. Its portfolio includes laser welding, Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding, micro-mould repair, high-purity metal casting, automated surface finishing and industrial cleaning systems designed to reduce downtime, improve repeatability and extend component life.

Capital is becoming the critical differentiator in mining as long lead times, rising costs and selective investors push companies to rethink how projects are funded. Mining has always suited the patient and the few willing to navigate the long, uneven cycles that define the sector. It rewards those who can absorb risk, manage political uncertainty, and wait out commodity markets that move without warning. What has changed is not the volatility itself but the way projects must now be financed. Capital structure, once a technical detail buried deep in planning documents, has moved to the centre of competitiveness.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) look straightforward from the outside – select a capacity, install it, start saving. In practice, the return on a BESS investment depends less on how large the system is, and more on how it is engineered to match the way a specific operation consumes electricity. That precision is harder to achieve than it sounds, and it is where most of the real engineering design work happens. Across mining, manufacturing and agri-processing, turnkey solar company SunRanch Solar has built its project delivery around optimised design, drawing on a growing portfolio of installations across different industries – and the reasoning behind it says as much about risk management as it does about electricity.

South Africa’s long-term growth challenge cannot be addressed without confronting the continued weakening of its manufacturing base. Over the past three decades, manufacturing’s contribution to GDP has fallen from about 21–22% in the early 1990s to around 12–13% today, alongside stagnating output and a weaker contribution to employment. Last week, Statistics South Africa released the latest production and sales data, which reports further decline in manufacturing output over the first 5 months of 2026. This is cause for concern and raises key but fundamental questions. What will it take to have an all-hands-on deck approach to South Africa’s industrial development?

As investment in hydrogen infrastructure gathers pace, the focus is extending beyond production technologies to the pipeline networks and components needed to transport the gas safely and reliably. Transporting hydrogen under high-pressure conditions requires confidence in the performance of pipeline materials and components. To address this, Italian piping specialist Tectubi Raccordi, a flagship company of Allied Group, has undertaken a multi-year programme to characterise and qualify its piping components for hydrogen service.

If your business sells any physical items, such as heavy machinery, equipment, or building materials, for R100 000 or more, the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) is watching more closely than ever. Under the FIC Act, you are likely defined as a High-Value Goods Dealer (HVGD), a classification that comes with customer due diligence and reporting obligations you cannot afford to overlook. Criminals have increasingly turned to high-value transactions to launder money, using purchases of vehicles, machinery and equipment to convert illicit funds into legitimate-looking assets. This shift in tactics is exactly why the sector is now under closer FIC scrutiny, and why the regulator expects HVGDs to have proper controls in place.

For asset-intensive industries, the rotables (or repairables) value stream should be an engine for significant financial value creation. When executed correctly, a robust refurbished spares programme considerably reduces input costs, retains liquid cash within the enterprise, and compresses parts availability lead times, dramatically accelerating the shift from unplanned maintenance back to beneficial operations. Yet, across industry, this critical business process frequently devolves into an operational black hole. Industrial leaders are already battling infrastructure bottlenecks, margin compression, digital transformation bottlenecks, and working capital traps. Introducing a disorganised, unmanaged reverse-logistics process into this environment only accelerates margin erosion.

Winter has a way of making us think about energy, whether we mean to or not. The geyser works harder. The heater stays on longer. Cold mornings remind you just how much you rely on electricity before the sun has had a chance to warm things up. For much of the last decade, that also meant checking which stage of load shedding was scheduled for the day. This winter, for the first time in more than ten years, most of the country hasn't needed to. Eskom's fleet availability has climbed from below 50% to above 65%, and two of the country's newest coal-fired power stations have finally reached full output. One of South Africa's three big energy questions has, for now, been answered.

You plan an outage, your digital system displays the correct quantities of strategically required materials, but when execution begins, the parts are either entirely missing or sitting degraded in a warehouse yard. This operational blind spot forces the emergency procurement of materials at a massive premium, directly eroding your bottom line. According to SparesCount, a company specialising in audit-grade wall-to-wall SAP-aligned inventory verification, inventory inaccuracy is perhaps the single biggest value leaker and distraction in industrial operations today.
