Pumps

Pumps are mechanical devices that move fluids—liquids or gases—by mechanical action, converting electrical or engine power into hydraulic energy. They are fundamental to a wide range of industrial, agricultural, municipal and commercial applications, including water supply, irrigation, mining dewatering, chemical processing, wastewater treatment and heating and cooling systems. Pumps are classified into two broad categories: positive displacement pumps, which move fluid by trapping a fixed volume and forcing it through the discharge, and centrifugal pumps, which impart velocity to the fluid using a rotating impeller. Selection depends on factors such as flow rate, pressure requirements, fluid properties and energy efficiency considerations. In mining, pumps are essential for dewatering operations, slurry transport and process water circulation. Agriculture relies heavily on pumps for irrigation, livestock watering and fertigation systems, particularly in water-scarce regions. Energy efficiency in pump systems has become a priority, with variable speed drives and smart controls enabling significant reductions in electricity consumption and operating costs. The global pump market is driven by infrastructure development, industrialisation, water scarcity and the energy transition, with growing demand for solar-powered and renewable-energy-compatible pumping solutions. In South Africa, pumps are critical to sectors facing energy constraints and water challenges, prompting investment in efficient and resilient pumping technologies. Advances in materials, digital monitoring and predictive maintenance are enhancing pump reliability and lifespan.

Pumps for Africa named Flygt distributor for Gauteng

Water technology developer Xylem has appointed Pumps for Africa as an authorised distributor and repairer of its Flygt pumps range for Gauteng, opening access to mines and power stations previously out of reach, says director Nic Winslow. The company plans to hold Flygt stock and offer a 24-hour service, and will showcase the range at the KragDag Expo and Electra Mining Africa later in 2026.

Life-cycle costs urged over upfront price in pump procurement

Schurco Slurry technical lead Curtis Green warns that African mining and industrial buyers focusing only on capital expenditure for slurry pumps often face unexpectedly high operating costs from energy use, wear and downtime, and urges total-expenditure-based procurement instead.

SAM Engineering marks 40 years, expands pump testing and support

South African manufacturer SAM Engineering, marking four decades of local pump manufacturing, offers SAMCO centrifugal pumps with application-focused selection, custom engineering, in-house performance testing to ISO 9906 standards, OEM spare parts and after-sales support. Separately, Integrated Pump Technology notes that deeper underground workings, erratic rainfall and rising energy costs are reshaping mines' choices between diesel-driven and submersible dewatering pumps.
