Licensed electricity trader Enpower Trading reports that it is delivering between 8 GWh and 16 GWh of wheeled renewable electricity monthly to three Sappi sites in line with a five-year corporate power purchase agreement and that it is aiming to extend supply to a fourth site.

The renewable electricity is being supplied through Enpower Trading’s renewable-energy portfolio, including generation from SolarAfrica Energy’s SunCentral solar project in the Northern Cape.

“What this milestone proves is that a licensed electricity trader can structure supply, navigate tariff and regulatory changes, manage the complexities of wheeling, and deliver renewable power to a large industrial user at scale,” Enpower co-founder and CEO James Beatty said in a statement.

Sappi Southern Africa CEO Graeme Wild described the supply of renewable electricity as a significant step forward in supporting the JSE-listed company’s sustainability ambitions, as well as its goal of building greater resilience in energy supply.

The forest products group would also continue to pursue opportunities to increase its renewable electricity consumption to reduce its Scope 2 emissions, including through additional third-party supply.

Beatty said that, with the structure in place and power flowing, the next step was to bring additional generation into the mix and extend supply to more of Sappi’s sites.
