SAWEA Profile

Overview

The South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) is a not-for-profit industry body representing the united voice of wind energy in South Africa. Established in 1998, the association has played a central role in advocating for the advancement of sustainable energy practices and policies, supporting the development of a resilient and competitive wind energy sector.

Who We Represent

SAWEA represents members across the full wind power value chain, including developers, manufacturers, service providers, investors and professional services. As a member-driven association, it brings together local and international expertise to support the responsible growth of the industry and to align sector development with South Africa’s broader energy and economic objectives.

What We Do

SAWEA’s work is focused on enabling the growth and sustainability of the wind energy sector through:

  • Advocacy for investment and enabling policy frameworks
  • Promotion of socio-economic development and transformation through wind power
  • Advancement of best practice in wind energy generation and operations
  • Provision of reliable market information and industry insights
  • Facilitation of stakeholder engagement across government, industry and the public

The association also promotes the role of wind energy in both large- and small-scale applications and supports the expansion of renewable energy investment across South Africa and the broader African region.

Industry Impact

Over the past two decades, the wind energy sector has become a key contributor to South Africa’s energy mix, supporting energy security, economic development and climate commitments. SAWEA has played an important role in enabling this growth by supporting policy development, facilitating industry collaboration and providing a platform for engagement across stakeholders.

Wind energy continues to offer a cost-effective and scalable solution to South Africa’s energy challenges, with strong potential to contribute to grid stability, local economic development and long-term sustainability.

Key Focus Areas

  • SAWEA’s current priorities reflect the evolving needs of the energy sector and the transition underway:
  • Supporting policy alignment to unlock investment in wind energy
  • Enabling a competitive and transparent electricity market environment
  • Advancing grid readiness and infrastructure development
  • Promoting localisation, skills development and socio-economic impact
  • Unlocking new opportunities for wind energy deployment, including regional and offshore potential

Closing

SAWEA remains committed to working collaboratively with government, industry and stakeholders to remove barriers to implementation and to support the continued growth of wind energy in South Africa. Through its work, the association contributes to building an energy system that is secure, inclusive and aligned with the country’s long-term development and climate goals.
