Fresh Produce Terminal redevelopment project, South Africa

Name of the Project
Fresh Produce Terminal redevelopment project.
Location
Point Precinct at the Port of Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Project Owner/s
State-owned Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) and FPT Group, which has been appointed as the terminal operator under a 20-year terminal operator agreement. Through the agreement, TNPA aims to unlock long-term private-sector investment in port infrastructure, while FPT is expected to implement operational improvements that benefit growers, exporters, shipping lines, transporters, clearing and forwarding agents and other stakeholders in the fresh produce export chain.
Project Description
The project entails the redevelopment, continued operation, maintenance and future development of a specialised fresh produce terminal at the Port of Durban. The terminal is expected to improve logistics efficiencies, support more reliable export flows and strengthen the Port of Durban’s capacity to handle increasing volumes of fresh produce.
The terminal’s throughput is projected to increase to about 1.691-million tonnes a year by 2028. Volumes are expected to increase by about 2% a year thereafter, stabilising at about 1.906-million tonnes a year by 2034. This is expected to support improved export reliability and enhance the competitiveness of South African citrus producers in global markets.
Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to support job preservation and create new employment opportunities linked to the redevelopment and operation of the terminal. In the redevelopment phase, about R397-million has been committed towards skills development, small business support and regional economic initiatives linked to terminal operations. Over the 20-year concession period, an estimated R3.3-billion has been earmarked for investment in supplier development, localisation and broader economic participation initiatives aligned with TNPA’s transformation objectives.
