Every August, South Africa celebrates the women who have shaped the nation's history. Yet beyond the public spotlight, thousands of women continue making an extraordinary contribution in industries that have traditionally been viewed as the domain of men.

Engineering and mining remain among the country's most critical economic sectors, responsible for enabling infrastructure development, industrial growth, mineral extraction and investment. Behind many of these projects are women solving complex engineering challenges, leading construction teams, managing mining operations, designing infrastructure, overseeing safety standards and driving innovation that supports economic growth.

Their contribution deserves greater recognition.

Women in engineering and mining are not only changing workplace demographics; they are bringing diverse perspectives to some of the country's most pressing challenges. From water security and energy infrastructure to sustainable mining and community development, inclusive leadership is helping shape more innovative and resilient industries.

Award-winning engineer and AvenirHoldings CEO Tshidi Mndzebele believes the conversation should move beyond simply increasing representation.

"We must create environments where women are empowered to lead, innovate, mentor and influence the future of our industries," she says.

As Gauteng Chairperson of Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA) and Women in the Built Environment Ambassador for Africa, Mndzebele has witnessed first-hand the impact that visible leadership and mentorship can have on young professionals entering engineering and mining.

She believes today's leaders have a responsibility to inspire the next generation of girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics while supporting women throughout their professional journeys towards leadership and professional registration.

South Africa cannot afford to overlook half of its available engineering talent.

As infrastructure investment accelerates and mining continues to evolve through technology, sustainability and innovation, the country will require a larger, more diverse pipeline of engineering professionals capable of solving increasingly complex challenges.

Women's Month is therefore more than a celebration.

It is an opportunity to acknowledge the engineers, project managers, technical specialists, artisans, geologists, mining professionals and entrepreneurs whose work often happens behind the scenes, but whose impact is felt across every community.

Lest we forget the women who are designing the infrastructure that connects our cities.

Lest we forget the women improving safety, sustainability and innovation across our mines.

Lest we forget the women transforming engineering into opportunity, infrastructure into prosperity, and innovation into economic growth.

Because when South Africa invests in women engineers and mining professionals, it invests in the country's future.
