Project Description

The project proposes the development and management of a multipurpose terminal in the Maydon Wharf precinct to handle agricultural dry-bulk and other compatible cargo. The brownfield concession will allow for the private operator to finance, design, build, operate and maintain the upgraded terminal facilities before transferring them back to TNPA at the end of the concession period. The project is intended to improve agricultural dry-bulk handling capacity, strengthen regional supply chains and support the Port of Durban’s role as a strategic trade gateway.

The concession tenure is expected to be 25 years, subject to the finalisation of a Terminal Operator Agreement with TNPA.

Latest Developments

The BAL SA & Africa Global Logistics Consortium was appointed as the preferred bidder for the development and management of the agricultural dry-bulk and compatible cargo terminal concession at Maydon Wharf on March 30, 2026. The preferred bidder will now enter negotiations with TNPA to finalise a Terminal Operator Agreement. This governance process will determine the next steps in implementing the project.
