MTN Group’s Ralph Mupita re-elected to GSMA board
Telecommunications firm MTN Group president and CEO Ralph Mupita has been elected to the GSMA board of directors for the January 2027 to December 2028 term.
Mupita joined the GSMA board for the 2025 to 2026 term and has served as deputy chairperson since April 2025.
The GSMA board comprises 26 senior representatives from global mobile operators, including both multinational groups and smaller independent operators, to provide strategic direction to the GSMA as it works to advance the mobile industry and unlock the full power of connectivity for people, businesses and society.
“I remain committed to supporting the strategic direction of the GSMA. It brings operators, the wider mobile ecosystem and policymakers to the same table, and that collaboration is what will sustain investment and make access more affordable for the people we serve,” Mupita said in a statement on Monday, adding that it is a privilege to continue serving on the GSMA board.
He plans to continue to drive the African agenda, with a focus on closing the use and coverage gaps, increasing investment and securing a climate-smart future.
“This term comes as AI begins to reshape our industry, while many people across Africa and the rest of the Global South are still to come online. Mobile remains the most powerful means we have of widening access to opportunity, and our task is to ensure that its benefits, and those of AI, reach everyone.”
He has been group president and CEO of MTN Group since September 2020, having served as Group CFO from April 2017, and previously led Old Mutual Emerging Markets across 19 countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia.
MTN's contribution during the term will be guided by its Ambition 2030 strategy of leading digital solutions for Africa's progress.
