PMI launches free course to help entrepreneurs turn ideas into viable businesses

Africa’s creator economy is projected to reach nearly US$18 billion by 2030, but turning an audience into a viable business takes planning, financial discipline and reliable delivery. Project Management Institute (PMI), the leading authority in project success, has launched a free course to help entrepreneurs across sectors build these skills. PMI® Foundations: Project Management for Entrepreneurs is designed for aspiring and early-stage entrepreneurs across sectors, including founders, side-hustle creators, solopreneurs, community innovators and small teams.
The need for practical entrepreneurship skills extends across Africa’s economy. The African Development Bank estimates that between 10 - 12 million young Africans enter the labour market each year, while only about 3 million formal jobs are created. For many young people, building a business offers a way to earn an income where employment opportunities are limited. The challenge is making that income sustainable, as findings from the Africa Creator Economy Report 2.0 highlight. About six in ten respondents reported earning less than US$100 a month from their creative work. Around 40% considered it part-time work, while 71% identified business strategy and management among the skills essential to attracting investment.
“These findings show why creators need support with the business behind their content,” says George Asamani, MD, Sub-Saharan Africa, PMI. “A brand deal can bring in revenue, but creators also need to understand what it will cost to deliver. Project management helps them plan that work and use their resources wisely. Those skills matter just as much to someone building a catering business or launching a new product.”
The report found that creators faced irregular income, uncertain payment dates and production costs that impacted their earnings. Against this backdrop, the course’s 'Before You Begin' and 'Know Your Numbers' modules address practical questions about readiness, resources and financial decisions. For a creator, accepting a campaign may mean paying an editor or hiring equipment before payment arrives. Planning costs and understanding cash flow can help them assess whether they can afford to take on the work and what they will need to deliver it.
Delivery brings another set of pressures. A sponsored video can involve a brief, filming, editing, and brand approval before publication. If one of the stages is delayed, the deadline may be affected. 'Organise the Work' introduces ways to break goals into tasks, clarify responsibilities and make dependencies visible. These practices become more important as creators pursue income beyond sponsorship. Launching merchandise, a paid workshop or an event requires decisions about demand, costs and delivery capacity. 'Test Your Idea With Customers' helps entrepreneurs examine assumptions before committing too much.
Visibility also needs to translate into business results. For a creator selling a product, views alone cannot establish whether the offer is working. 'Get Seen, and Trusted' explores communicating value and building credibility, while 'Sell and Measure What Works' helps learners assess their efforts and adjust using evidence. The practical question becomes which activities are bringing customers closer to buying.
As a creator’s business grows, balancing content production with the demands of running it can become exhausting, especially when every task and decision still rests with one person. 'Lead Well Under Pressure' and 'Build Your Support System' address communication, leadership and relationships, while 'Grow With Intention' helps entrepreneurs assess whether their capacity, systems and resources can support expansion.
The five-hour online course offers flexible, choose-your-own-adventure learning, combining practical templates, reflection exercises, insights from experienced founders and AI-supported brainstorming. It covers eight core areas: assessing readiness and resources, financial planning and cash flow, organising and sequencing work, validating ideas with customers, building visibility and trust, measuring what works, leading under pressure, and planning for sustainable growth. No formal business background or project management experience is required.
“A growing creator economy needs businesses that can deliver consistently and sustain the people behind them,” Asamani adds.
“We want entrepreneurs across sectors to have access to practical skills that help them keep their commitments, work through uncertainty and make informed choices about growth.”
