Project Description
The project involves the replacement of critical recovery boiler components in the existing MgO1 boiler, which uses magnesium closed-loop recovery technology.
The upgrade aims to improve operational safety, reduce the risk of unplanned downtime and improve the reliability of the mill.
The project’s scope includes the replacement of the recovery boiler rear wall and economiser, as well as project management, engineering, manufacturing, materials, installation planning and erection of the recovery boiler pressure parts.

Latest Developments
Valmet announced in May 2026 that it had been selected by Sappi Southern Africa to deliver a full engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) package for the recovery boiler component replacement at the Saiccor mill. The work forms part of a planned shutdown-related upgrade to critical boiler parts.
