Name of the Project
Sofia Offshore Wind Farm.
Location
Dogger Bank, in the central North Sea, about 195 km off the north-east coast of England, UK.
Project Owner/s
RWE, through Sofia Offshore Wind Farm Limited. The project is 100% owned by RWE.
Project Description
The project entails the construction of a 1.4 GW offshore wind farm across a 593 km² site in water depths of about 20 m to 35 m.
The wind farm comprises 100 Siemens Gamesa SG 14-222 DD turbines. Each turbine has a capacity of 14 MW, is 252 m high at the blade tip, with 108-m-long blades and a 222-m rotor diameter.
Half of the turbines are fitted with specialist recyclable blades and associated components manufactured by Siemens Gamesa and assembled at Green Port Hull.
Power will be transmitted using a high-voltage direct-current system. Once fully operational, Sofia is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to supply about 1.2-million typical UK homes.
Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to support thousands of jobs during development and construction; a precise project-wide employment figure was not stated in the sources reviewed.
Capital Expenditure
The project cost is estimated at about £6.08-billion.
Planned Start/End Date
All turbines are expected to be fully commissioned and the wind farm fully operational by the end of 2026.
Latest Developments
RWE completed the installation of all 100 turbines on June 10, 2026. Turbine installation was undertaken using Cadeler’s Wind Peak jack-up vessel, operated by Siemens Gamesa.
Testing and commissioning of the high-voltage direct-current distribution system are continuing before the turbines are connected to the system and the wind farm is brought online in phases.
Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (manufacture, fabrication and installation of the 100 turbines); Cadeler (Wind Peak turbine-installation vessel); Van Oord (foundations and array cables); Prysmian Group (high-voltage direct-current export link); and GE Grid Solutions and Seatrium, formerly Sembcorp Marine (on- and offshore converter stations and offshore converter platform).
