Engineering consultant Steinmüller Africa has dispatched its first fully designed and manufactured Header-Type HP heater into service at a South African power station.

The company highlights that the completion of this project is proof that world-leading power generation equipment can be conceived, engineered and built entirely on South African soil.

The specialised heat exchanger uses bled steam from the turbine to preheat boiler feedwater, thereby improving a power station’s overall thermal efficiency.

“The HP heater will improve power plant efficiency by using extraction steam from the turbine to heat boiler feedwater before it enters the boiler,” says Steinmüller Africa executive director Moso Bolofo.

The company points out that this project was ‘six years in the making’ from concept to delivery, and ran through Steinmüller Africa’s in-house systems, from using its 3D modelling systems and computational fluid dynamics modelling, to in-house fabrication technology.

Steinmüller Africa has opted for the rollout of friction welding technology, which has resulted in significant improvements to weld quality, consistency and production output.

On efficiency gains, the company notes that the reduced heat demand has been made possible through the Header-Type HP heater, which is evident throughout the boiler system as feedwater temperatures hold steadier and thermal stress on critical boiler pressure components drops.

There is also a drop in coal- and ash-firing systems, which has a direct impact on reduced flue gas, erosion and boiler tube leaks.

“This project demonstrates the value of integrated planning, cross-functional collaboration, continuous innovation, and disciplined safety and quality management in delivering a technically complex engineering solution.

“It’s proof of the engineering capability that South Africa has built for itself,” Bofolo concludes.
