TNPA starts multimillion-rand road infrastructure upgrade in Richards Bay
State-owned Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has started a R375-million rehabilitation programme to upgrade critical road infrastructure at the Port of Richards Bay, in KwaZulu-Natal.
This programme focuses on the Urania, Newark and Ventura roads and key transport corridors within the port that provide access to major terminals and operational facilities, and the works include pavement strengthening, road widening, concrete surfacing, drainage and stormwater improvements and road safety enhancements.
Notably, TNPA reports that there has been an increase in heavy vehicle traffic over recent years, which has accelerated the deterioration of these routes, which therefore require significant upgrades to ensure long-term operational sustainability.
The organisation adds that this investment forms part of TNPA’s ongoing infrastructure renewal programme to support cargo growth, improve operational efficiency and strengthen South Africa’s logistics network.
This project will also advance Transnet’s Reinvent for Growth strategy, which prioritises infrastructure recovery and enhanced performance across the logistics value chain.
“This investment demonstrates TNPA’s commitment to develop and maintain world-class port infrastructure that enables economic trade.
“The rehabilitation of these key roads will improve safety and ensure that the Port of Richards Bay continues to meet the needs of all port users while supporting future growth and investment,” says TNPA Richards Bay port manager Winnie Mpanza.
The organisation highlights that the project is expected to create about 72 employment opportunities during the construction phase and the 18-month project commenced in October, forming part of TNPA’s broader commitment to investing in infrastructure that improves the competitiveness, efficiency and resilience of South Africa’s ports.
Once completed, this project is expected to improve road capacity and condition, resulting in smoother traffic flow, faster truck turnaround times and greater operational reliability.
