Creating meaningful opportunities for women in mining and industry requires more than policy commitments - it demands sustained action, visible leadership and a culture that actively supports inclusion. At mining technology provider Weir, advancing gender equity forms part of the company’s broader commitment to inclusion, diversity and equity with initiatives across Africa designed to empower, connect and develop women throughout the organisation.

Central to this effort is the Weir Women’s Network (WWN) and its Africa Local Chapter, an employee-led affinity group focused on supporting and advancing women within the business. Formally launched in the region in 2021, the network has become an important platform for collaboration, mentorship and professional growth while helping to foster a more inclusive workplace culture.

Aligned to the Global WWN and supported by regional leadership, the Africa chapter delivers programmes that reflect the realities of women working in mining and industrial sectors across the continent. These include leadership discussions, networking opportunities, community outreach initiatives and engagements focused on career development and representation.

In South Africa, the network has partnered with organisations such as Women in Mining South Africa and local educational institutions to encourage greater participation by women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and technical careers.

By combining strong local engagement with global strategy, Weir Africa continues to build a workplace culture where women are supported, empowered and encouraged to thrive - strengthening both the organisation and the industries it serves.
