Cape Town Container Terminal shows improved performance – TPT
The Cape Town Container Terminal showed a 16% increase in volume-throughput in the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year compared with the same period last year, says Transnet Port Terminals (TPT).
Average truck turnaround time now stands at 39.9 minutes, with year-to-date truck turnaround times improving by 35% compared with the same period last year.
Rail performance recorded an 82% increase compared with the same period last year.
Average vessel waiting time improved from 115 hours during the same period in 2025, to 44.3 hours, reports TPT.
Cape Town Container Terminal manager Noxolo Thabatha says the recent gains reflect the impact of increased focus on equipment reliability, operational planning and teamwork.
“There is still work to do, but the progress made during the first quarter shows that the changes we have introduced are producing measurable improvements in terminal performance.”
Thabatha says equipment reliability particularly has played a key role in the terminal’s improved performance.
Four additional straddle carriers have entered endurance testing, increasing operational capacity and equipment availability.
The container terminal has also recorded its lowest levels of rubber-tyred gantry crane breakdowns since the introduction of the new fleet, supporting improved truck turnaround times, increased ship working hours and stronger overall productivity.
Other operational improvements during the first quarter included a reduction in operational delays through improved planning and execution – applying lessons from the previous financial year – and strengthening coordination with stakeholders.
Thabatha says sustaining equipment reliability remains essential to maintaining consistent operational performance.
“The terminal will continue refining maintenance planning and equipment deployment as newer assets are brought into full operation.”
