Chinese solar energy group setting up manufacturing facility in Egypt
Chinese private-sector solar PV inverter and related energy storage systems manufacturer Sungrow has announced the start of construction of its new energy storage system manufacturing plant in Egypt. Located in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, this will support Egypt’s large-scale roll-out of solar energy.
“By establishing localised manufacturing capabilities, Sungrow is boosting delivery efficiency and enabling faster, more responsive support for renewable-energy projects across the Middle East and Africa,” highlighted Sungrow VP Thompson Meng. “We firmly believe that successful localisation goes beyond a manufacturing facility. By working closely with local companies and stakeholders, further deepening local supply chain collaboration, we seek to accelerate Egypt’s clean energy transition. We will share our renewable-energy expertise and technologies, nurture local talent, and help unlock Egypt’s full potential as Africa’s leading renewable-energy hub.”
The new plant was planned to start operations in June next year. It had a designed production capacity of 10 GWh/y.
Initially, it will support the construction of the Sustainable Energy Valley project, located in the Egyptian Governorate of Minya. This is being jointly developed by the Egyptian government and Scatec, a Norway-based renewable-energy group. Sungrow will provide the project with energy storage systems with a capacity of 4 GWh.
The Chinese company has been active in Egypt since at least 2021. It contributed to the recently commissioned Abydos Phase II solar and energy storage project, situated in the Aswan Governorate. This has a solar PV generating capacity of 1.2 GW, with an energy storage capacity of 720 MWh. When fully operational, it will be the biggest single-site integrated solar-and-storage project in Africa.
