Name of the Project
Choczewo nuclear power plant (NPP) project.

Location
Lubiatowo-Kopalino site, in the Choczewo municipality of Pomerania, in Poland.

Project Owner/s
State-owned Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ).

Project Description
Choczewo will comprise three Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear units with a total capacity of 3 750 MWe, and will be the first nuclear project in Poland.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
Not stated.

Planned Start/End Date
Construction of every reactor is expected to take about seven years, followed by about one year of testing and commissioning. The first reactor will start commercial operation in 2036, the second in 2037 and the third in 2038.

The first nuclear concrete is scheduled to be poured in the fourth quarter of 2028, subject to obtaining the required construction licence and construction permit. PEJ plans to submit its construction permit application in 2027.

Latest Developments
PEJ reported on September 25, 2026, that Bechtel had signed an agreement with Polish company Polimex Mostostal for the supply, installation and commissioning of two module assembly buildings.

The contract covers engineering services, design documentation for the necessary permits, materials supply, structural assembly, testing, acceptance and final handover. Each building will be 129 m long, 55 m wide and 44 m high, with two 125 t overhead cranes and one 60 t crane.

The temporary, climate-controlled buildings will be located next to the units under construction. They will accommodate the assembly of structural and mechanical modules, containment rings and domes, and shield building panels. The enclosed conditions will support welding, testing and certification before the completed modules are lifted into position.

On September 23, 2026, PEJ and the Westinghouse–Bechtel consortium announced an agreement on the main commercial and legal terms of the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract. Negotiations have not been finalised; the agreement provides a framework for further negotiations on the remaining contract terms and appendices. Both parties aim to conclude negotiations by the end of 2026.

The second phase of preparatory works and detailed geological surveys is under way. PEJ submitted its construction licence application to the National Atomic Energy Agency in March 2026 and handed the site over to Bechtel in August 2026. Budimex is undertaking earthworks, including grading, drainage improvements and temporary roads.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Westinghouse and Bechtel consortium (NPP delivery; main EPC terms agreed, with remaining terms under negotiation); Polimex Mostostal (module assembly buildings); and Budimex (earthworks).
