The Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) has responded to concerns raised by an Engineering News reader regarding recurring escalator outages at Sandton station and the potential impact on passenger movement, particularly during peak periods.

GMA communication and marketing senior executive manager Albi Modise tells the publication that routine maintenance is continuously being undertaken to support the reliability of station infrastructure and identify equipment faults that may require attention.

“We are engaging with the relevant engineering and maintenance teams to establish the causes of the reported recurring escalator outages, reviewing the maintenance history of the affected equipment and determining what further corrective measures may be required to improve reliability and minimise repeat failures,” he informs.

The GMA is also obtaining further information on the frequency and causes of escalator faults, repair timelines, maintenance interventions, passenger-flow management arrangements and any reported safety incidents associated with congestion in the affected areas.

“We recognise that reliable station infrastructure is essential to providing passengers with a safe, efficient and comfortable travel experience. Crowd management is an important element of safety and arrangements are also assessed regularly in response to operational conditions and identified risks, particularly where equipment outages may affect passenger movement,” Modise stresses.

“The escalators form an important part of passenger flow through the station, and when equipment is out of service, we are aware that this may cause frustration to our passengers and place additional pressure on alternative access routes and contribute to congestion. Passenger safety remains a priority, and we take concerns about overcrowding and the potential risks of falls, injuries or other safety incidents seriously.

“Our focus remains on improving infrastructure reliability, addressing recurring faults and ensuring that passenger safety is central to the Gautrain experience.”
