Green Methanol Corridor Blueprint Project, South Africa – update

Name of the Project
Green Methanol Corridor Blueprint Project.
Location
The project is planned for the Vaal Special Economic Zone (SEZ), in Gauteng, South Africa. The Vaal SEZ is being positioned as a hub for the hydrogen economy and low-carbon industrial development in the Vaal region.
Project Owner/s
The project is being developed by South African project developer Green e-Fuels Producers, or GeFP. Climate Investor Three, through its affiliate SA-H2 Fund, has signed a development funding agreement and project implementation plan with GeFP. SA-H2 Fund is managed by Climate Fund Managers in partnership with Invest International.
Project Description
The project entails the development of what is being presented as South Africa's first wastewater-to-green-methanol production facility and the first commercial anchor of a scalable Green Methanol Corridor.
The plant is expected to process about 90 000 t/y of municipal sewage sludge from the Sebokeng Wastewater Treatment Works and convert the waste stream into about 14 300 t/y of green methanol. It is also expected to recover clean water, phosphate and oxygen as co-products.
The production process will integrate wastewater treatment, renewable-energy, electrolysis, carbon capture and methanol synthesis. The project plans to use 50 MW of solar PV capacity and 10 MW of wind capacity to support a 10 MW electrolyser.
The technology model is based on a hybrid Power-to-X and Bio-to-X approach using sewage sludge as a biogenic carbon feedstock and renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen for methanol synthesis. The project is designed to produce advanced biomethanol and e-methanol for domestic and export markets.
GeFP expects the facility to avoid an estimated 118 950 t/y of CO2-equivalent emissions, subject to further technical validation and certification, and to return about 50 000 m3/y to 60 000 m3/y of industrial-grade water to the local water utility.
Most of the output is expected to target regulated EU markets, with potential applications in maritime transport, chemicals, road fuels and sustainable aviation fuel through methanol-to-jet pathways.
Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to create about 400 temporary construction jobs and 90 permanent positions.
Capital Expenditure
€127-million.
The Climate Investor Three/SA-H2 Fund has committed up to $4-million in development funding for technical and engineering design, environmental- and social-impact assessments, permitting and commercial structuring. The agreement also gives the fund the right to participate in equity funding of up to $26-million.
Planned Start/End Date
A final investment decision is expected within 12 to 18 months of September 2026. Commercial operations are expected to start in 2029.
Latest Developments
In September 2026, the project was named as one of the first six priority projects to emerge from government's national green hydrogen programme and was included in the National Green Hydrogen Deal Book.
The project is at prefeasibility stage. It has a planned ten-year offtake arrangement covering 90% of output for the EU market.
A development funding agreement and project implementation plan with Climate Fund Managers provide a governance, funding and execution framework for the bankable feasibility study.
Industrial land is available and appropriately zoned, basic environmental approvals are in place and the Vaal SEZ bulk-infrastructure masterplan includes the project requirements.
Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Climate Fund Managers, through Climate Investor Three/SA-H2 Fund (development funding and potential equity participation). GeFP previously listed African Hydrogen Ventures as a co-investor, IX Engineers as owner's engineer, FEV Group as system architect, tec4fuels as new-fuels expert, EKONAMI as component supplier and PERK as digital integrator for the broader Green Methanol Corridor initiative; the National Green Hydrogen Deal Book does not confirm their current appointment to the Blueprint Project.
