As manufacturers continue to focus on competitiveness, resilience, and decarbonisation, compressed air optimisation is becoming an increasingly important lever for long-term industrial performance, asserts compressor and air treatment equipment supplier CompAir, part of Ingersoll Rand.

The company notes that compressed air is a major energy consumer in industrial production, with energy accounting for up to 80% of a compressed air system’s lifecycle costs.

The company has designed a tool to help identify opportunities for energy savings. The Energy Check tool provides data-driven analysis of a facility’s complete compressed air network, from generation and air treatment to distribution and consumption.

The tool can be used to help identify energy savings by detecting problems such as:

  • Excess pressure
  • Air leaks
  • Pressure drops
  • Inefficient controls
  • Oversized air treatment
  • Poor maintenance strategies

The aim is to enable the delivery of more compressed air with less energy. For example, reducing system pressure by 1 bar can lower energy consumption by more than 10%, explains the company. Similarly, recovering waste heat from compressor systems can significantly reduce heating costs and CO₂ emissions.

The tool can also be used to devise an action plan with practical recommendations to improve reliability, lower operational costs, and support sustainability goals.

“Compressed air should no longer be viewed as just a utility,” emphasises CompAir. “It is a strategic energy system that can be measured, optimised, and actively managed.”
