South Africa’s mining equipment manufacturing sector gathered at the 2026 MEMSA #MindShift Conference with a clear under-standing that mining is entering a period of accelerated transformation, driven by AI, digitalisation, localisation, sustainability and changing workforce demands.

Hosted by Mining Equipment Manufacturers of South Africa (MEMSA), the conference explored not only the technologies reshaping mining, but also the structural and cultural shifts needed to keep South Africa’s mining supply chain resilient and globally competitive.

A key theme was the growing impact of AI on professional and technical work. While previous automation waves largely affected blue-collar roles, AI is increasingly automating reporting, analysis, administration, coding and other knowledge-based tasks.

The message, however, was one of adaptation rather than fear. Mining remains a highly practical industry where human judgement, contextual awareness and hands-on problem-solving remain critical. Future competitiveness will increasingly depend on people and organisations learning to work alongside intelligent technologies rather than compete with them.

The conference also examined the future of research and development (R&D), highlighting that traditional, multi-year research cycles are increasingly out of step with the pace of technological change.

Speakers called for more agile, industry-driven and commercially focused R&D, particularly in automation, mineral processing, energy transition and AI-enabled systems.

The 2026 Innovation for Mining and Excellence Awards, sponsored by intellectual property law firm Spoor and Fisher, recognised technologies delivering meaningful advances in safety, productivity, sustainability and operational performance.

Judged by three independent panels comprising leaders from mining, manufacturing, research, skills development and industry, the awards placed equal weighting on innovation and measurable industry impact.

The exceptionally high standard of entries reflected the depth and diversity of innovation emerging from South Africa’s mining equipment manufacturing ecosystem.

The 2026 MEMSA Awards

A significant award category was the Excellence Award: Future Workforce Builders, recognising organisations developing future-ready mining talent.

Bell Equipment South Africa received the main award for its culture of innovation and continuous learning. Judges highlighted its comprehensive talent pipeline, which currently supports 278 apprentices, alongside a dedicated training centre for artisans and apprentices. The company has also integrated digital skills into artisan development, preparing technical teams to work effectively with intelligent and connected mining machines.

The small and medium enterprise (SME) category winner, Buraaq Mining Services, was recognised for its expanding artisan training programme, industry and institutional collaboration, and emphasis on continuous learning and practical digital technology exposure.

Global Impact

The Excellence Award: Global Game Changer highlighted the growing international relevance of South African mining technology.

AZTEC Innovative Mining Solutions received the award after achieving 100% export output in 2023, 2024 and 2025, before securing its first local order in 2026. Its gold tailings treatment technology has been recognised internationally as a potentially disruptive approach to modern tailings management. Despite its global expansion, the company maintains local manufacturing and increased its workforce by 25% to meet international demand.

SMEs featured strongly throughout the awards. Buraaq Mining Services also received the Innovation by an SME Award for its mechanised roof bolter. The machine removes operators from drilling zones and incorporates programmable safety interlocks, ergonomic design and intelligent control systems, with readiness for integration with modern collision-prevention technology.

AI, Data and Digital Mining

New for 2026, the Innovative Use of Data and AI category showcased practical applications of AI and knowledge management.

The inaugural winner, Mentormate, developed an AI-powered engineering expertise platform tailored to Southern African mining conditions. Incorporating legislation, standards and technical case studies, the platform provides real-time engineering guidance through natural-language queries.

Cybarete’s KRUX (Knowledge Retrieval and Unification Exchange) was another standout in this category, making organisational knowledge across documents, folders and emails accessible through natural-language searches.

Together, the entries demonstrated that AI’s value in mining extends beyond automation to operational intelligence, decision-making and knowledge accessibility.

The Digital Solutions for Mining Award went to SmartOps for its Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) wearable and anchor tags system. Using BLE mesh networking rather than traditional WiFi, the system provides precise underground positioning and bi-directional communication, allowing workers to receive warnings while transmitting their location.

Energy Transition and Sustainability

The Innovation for an Energy Transition in Mining category recognised technologies reducing carbon intensity while improving efficiency.

Nkangala Mining Equipment was runner-up for its battery-driven load-haul-dump machine, incorporating a modular battery exchange system designed to reduce operational downtime.

The winner, Gravitas Minerals, was recognised for its Chromex Process, a proprietary water-only technology recovering chrome and iron from tailings. The system reduces energy consumption and carbon emissions, creates value from tailings and recovers about 70% of process water for re-use.

Innovation Across Mining Disciplines

The Innovation in Surface Mining category recognised technologies improving safety, productivity and efficiency in open-pit and earthmoving operations.

Machinery Contractors’ Brachio Claw was a notable entry — a compact hydraulic system developed with a mining operation to mechanise the hazardous insertion and extraction of pins from large earthmoving equipment.

Bell Equipment South Africa won the category for its Advanced Motor Grader Platform, featuring AI-ready architecture, telematics integration and operator-focused ergonomic improvements.

In mineral processing, MechProTech was recognised for its high-capacity stainless steel vibrating screen, developed for fine screening in highly corrosive environments. Advanced virtual prototyping enabled a solution incorporating flange-mounted motors and poly-wedge panels for improved chemical resistance and structural durability.

The Innovation in Mineral Processing Award went to AZTEC Innovative Mining Solutions for its patented reactor technology, which enables additional gold recovery from as-arising leach tailings through a novel counter-current flow design.

SmartOps received a second award for Innovation in Soft Rock Mining for its Cutting Sequence Monitor, using BLE mesh technology to improve underground efficiency and positional accuracy.

The Innovation in Hard Rock Mining, also known as the Navin Singh Award, honours the late Navin Singh, former MEMSA director and founding co-director of the Mandela Mining Precinct.

The 2026 winner, Wekaba Engineering, was recognised for its patented Grout Flower Seal Solution. The selectively porous pre-fitted seal improves grout retention during anchor installation, producing denser grout columns, stronger load-bearing performance and reduced grout wastage. More than 1.3-million units have already been sold.

Innovation with Purpose

HydroPower Systems received the Innovation Towards Zero Harm Award for its water-powered long-hole drilling system, enabling remote, workerless ore-pass development and underground preconditioning while reducing worker exposure to unsupported ground.

Runner-up Jarus Mining Supplies was recognised for its locally designed low profile mine rescue ambulance.

A Sector Adapting to Change

As the conference concluded, a sense of pragmatic optimism emerged.

The 2026 MEMSA #MindShift Conference and Innovation for Mining and Excellence Awards demonstrated that South African mining companies and equipment manufacturers are not simply responding to change — they are developing practical, globally competitive technologies capable of reshaping mining.

From AI and digital systems to safety, workforce development and energy transition, the message was clear: the future belongs to organisations that combine technological innovation with practical value and human adaptability.
