Rand Water implements restrictions on overconsuming municipalities
Rand Water will start restricting supply to municipalities that continue to exceed their allocated water consumption volumes.
The utility, in a statement issued on Friday, said that despite numerous warnings to municipalities to immediately reduce water consumption, the water supply system remains severely constrained, forcing Rand Water to take action to stabilise the system and ensure equitable distribution.
The restrictions may result in low water pressure or intermittent water supply in affected municipalities.
Rand Water highlighted that the cities of Johannesburg and Tshwane continue to overconsume water, along with the Emfuleni, Mogale City, Rustenburg, Midvaal and Madibeng local municipalities.
Municipalities that have reduced their use and remain within the permitted limits include the City of Ekurhuleni, and the Metsimaholo, Govan Mbeki, Merafong, Lesedi, Ngwathe, Victor Khanye and Thembisile Hani local municipalities, as well as the Royal Bafokeng Administration.
“Excessive water consumption places an unfair burden on municipalities that remain within their permitted limits. Water must be distributed equitably and the efforts of customers who reduce their consumption should not be undermined by those who fail to do so.
“Rand Water has a duty to protect the bulk water supply system and will continue engaging municipalities that exceed their permitted consumption limits. Water conservation is a shared responsibility. Municipalities, residents and businesses are urged to use water responsibly to ensure a sustainable and equitable supply for all,” the utility concluded.
