VUT hosted seminar to empower young women through digital technology
On Saturday, the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) held its inaugural VUT Basetsana Seminar. Hosted by VUT Student Support Services at the Desmond Tutu Great Hall on the VUT Vandebijlpark Campus, it was aimed at empowering young women by means of innovation, technology and digital leadership.
The seminar assembled some 500 young women under the theme “Building a generation of digitally smart and socially responsible young women”. Thousands more participated virtually, via the institution’s official social media platforms.
The event was in support of the VUT Strategic Plan 2033+, which aims at developing innovative, employable techno-entrepreneurial graduates, able to meet the challenges faced by both industry and society. The seminar provided a day of immersive learning, inspiration and engagement.
The programme featured women who were influential leaders, industry experts, technocrats and media personalities. They shared their experiences and sought to equip the young women with real-world knowledge on how to confidently and safely navigate the digital world.
Apart from addresses, the seminar included interactive panel discussions and focused masterclasses on cyberbullying, image-based abuse, online safety, digital wellbeing, professional branding on social media, social media monetisation and e-commerce. Several of the speakers provided insights on how to use digital platforms for entrepreneurship and to achieve influence.
