South Africa now has a national body dedicated to electric vehicles (EVs) and the ecosystem surrounding them – the South African Electric Mobility Association (SAEMA).

SAEMA aims to give the local EV industry a unified domestic voice.

SAEMA represents the breadth of the electric mobility ecosystem in South Africa, including consumers, retailers, charging providers and infrastructure stakeholders.

The association says it will act as the EV sector’s collective voice in engaging with stakeholders on policies, regulations and standards, as well as the reforms needed to accelerate South Africa’s transition to electric mobility.

“South Africa is now part of a global community of nations with a dedicated voice for electric mobility,” says SAEMA cofounder Hiten Parmar.

SAEMA launched with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association (NEVA), the world’s largest and most influential EV membership organisation.

The agreement was signed by NEVA international projects and partnerships head Markus Rotevatn and Parmar.

Rotevatn delivered a presentation on the drivers of Norwegian electric mobility at the launch event, with around 98% of new-car sales in this Nordic country now battery EVs.

“This MoU with NEVA, which represents the world’s most advanced EV market, is a powerful signal of our commitment,” says Parmar.

“It gives us a partner to learn from as we build an industry that serves all stakeholders of electric mobility, as we represent their needs to government.”
